The Rescue
Copyright 2005 by Jon Gill

The castle lies atop the distant hill
Dark and dreary, exuding its evil will
My way for now obstructed from its view
A hundred thorn-trees fall as I go through
I wonder, will my efforts be confirmed?
A precious prize to win, and one well earned
The last branch in my way is laid to waste
The first of many impediments to face.

Swinging sword and shield around my head
I beat back every blow of fear and dread
Matching the dragon’s movements with my own
If he has a weakness it will soon be known
I can only hope to beat him with my speed
My relentless cuts cause him to bleed
Tirelessly I do what must be done
To kill this renowned foe in one-on-one.

I’ve reached the solid walls I must retake
With a path of victories that line my wake
Every stone I climb wants me to fall
With every foot I overcome the wall
And at the top no rest will be awarded
For a hundred guards are waiting to be thwarted
Some just fall, and others take a fight
But nothing will stand in my way this night

A silence falls upon the beaten foes
No challengers remain in these shadows
I search the towers for my promised prize
But nothing pleasing emerges for my eyes
There is one door that I cannot unlock
So unlike all the rest, I simply knock
By itself it answers my request
And I enter slowly hoping to find rest

The room is filled with glowing orange light
Of a fire built for warmth on this cold night
But as inviting as it is to flee the gloom
Something more divine lives in this room
My eyes search shortly ‘round for what to see
And beauty now emerges suddenly!
Radiant in white, angelic heart
And I know my fight was worth it from the start

Your arms encircle me with boundless love
You tell me all that you’ve been dreaming of
How never had a hero come for you
Each one fell before he’d gotten through
And though your hopes had risen with each knight
All had given up without a fight
And now you’ve lived in shadows in this tower
Not knowing your own beauty ‘till this hour

You saw me coming from a distance off
But all hope had been beaten by a scoff
With every obstacle I overcame
You still waited long to call my name
For fear your only hope would be abused
For fear that even I would only lose
So long I looked and sought your hidden door
Knowing that your face was worth the war

A prize beyond what I was ever dreaming
Has come into my arms with smile beaming
And whatever trial comes upon our way
I know that you will always by me stay
Forever we shall be assured of strength
Never fearing to go to every length
Whatever dragons we have yet to face
Together we have victory by Grace.
