Victory
Copyright 2003 by Jon Gill
What decides a winning hand
Unless the hand is played?
How is courage measured
Unless one is afraid?
What have we been promised?
A smooth sea, or a sturdy boat?
Only that in a tempest,
We will remain afloat.
Some may measure winning
By valor, points, or skill
Some may measure rather
By persistence of the will
But regardless of the measure
One common thing abides:
No victory was ever won
By watching from the sides.
